Combat Violence Against Women

OUR PHILANTHROPY

Ever since Sigma Psi Zeta adapted its National Philanthropy: to combat violence against women in its varied forms in 1999, sisters have been committed to bringing awareness of the prevalence of violence against women to our universities and communities. Acts of violence include but are not limited to the following: rape, incest, domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, exploitation, the trafficking of women and children, the abuse of migrant workers, intimidation at work, child abuse, harassment, and spousal abuse. Any physical, emotional, or mental duress constitutes violence.

To accomplish this, sisters:

  • Volunteer at domestic violence and local women's shelters

  • Sponsor or attend conferences and meetings that empower women's rights

  • Lend support to women who need this specific type of support and seek help for them

  • Help to stop violations against female refugees and asylum seekers

  • Advocate for political causes that affect such demographics

  • Attend and host self-defense workshops and classes

  • Collaborate artistically and educationally with other women of color

  • Donate proceeds of activities to organizations that support this same cause

  • Organize collection drives and secure in-kind donations for local charities and domestic violence shelters

Nationally, Sigma Psi Zeta is an official partner of White House’s It's On Us campaign - an initiative of the Obama-Biden Administration to end sexual assaults on all college campuses. In August 2020, Sigma Psi Zeta officially announced its partnership with the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) with other National APIDA Panhellenic Association (NAPA) Greek organizations. RAINN is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization; by partnering with RAINN, Sigma Psi Zeta is determined to bring sexual misconduct and allyship training to its members.

At Nu Chapter, sisters bring awareness to our community and the communities at large by participating in peaceful rallies with local sisterships, holding informative workshops for Take Back the Night, and hosting our annual philanthropy banquet Project Purple. We also organize fundraising events during Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Over the years, we have donated our fundraiser proceeds to different non-profit organizations such as Women Against Abuse, Lutheran Settlement House, and Women Organized Against Rape

During October of 2022, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Nu Chapter held an Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Workshop with Drexel's Office of Institutional Equity and Inclusive Culture and tabled for DVAM. We also held a Pie-A-Sigma Fundraiser in which we raised and donated over five hundred dollars to Women Against Abuse. Women Against Abuse is a nonprofit agency, and Philadelphia’s leading domestic violence advocate and service provider. They are also among the largest domestic violence agencies in the country.
